Honoring Loved Ones Who Have Passed Away on Your Wedding Day

First details on Nyla and Alex’s wedding painting that paid tribute to her father.

The angel wings in the sky were a very sweet request to honor Nyla’s father.

When planning your wedding, it's natural to want to honor loved ones who have passed away. Incorporating their memory into your special day can be a meaningful and heartfelt way to celebrate their lives. Here are some ideas on how to include them in your live wedding painting:

1. Dedicate the Painting to Them:

  • A heartfelt inscription: Add a personal message or quote from your loved one to the painting.

  • A symbolic element: Incorporate a symbol or image that represents your loved one, such as a flower, a favorite animal, or a special object. In the example above, one of my amazing brides, Nyla, requested angel wings in the sky above the ceremony.

2. Include Their Portraits:

  • A photo within the painting: If you have a favorite photo of your loved one, ask the artist to include it as part of the composition.

  • A separate portrait: Commission a separate portrait of your loved one to display alongside the wedding painting. I have also had requests for more simple guest portrait-style paintings of loved ones who have passed.

3. Capture Their Favorite Moments:

  • Special rituals: If your loved one had any special rituals or traditions, incorporate them into the painting.

4. Symbolize Their Presence:

  • A vacant chair: Leave a chair empty at the ceremony to symbolize the loved one's presence.

  • A special memento: Place a personal item belonging to your loved one on the table or altar.

5. Incorporate Their Favorite Colors or Flowers:

  • Color palette: Use colors that were significant to your loved one in the painting.

  • Floral arrangements: Include their favorite flowers in the bouquets or centerpieces.

By incorporating these ideas into your live wedding painting, you can create a beautiful and meaningful tribute to loved ones who have passed away. Remember, the most important thing is to choose a way that feels authentic and meaningful to you and your family. A painting could also make an incredible gift to a bride or groom who lost someone who should be at the wedding. We can work together to plan a painting of a special moment such as a father-daughter dance, or a mother helping with a bride’s dress.
